Superhero manga series My Hero Academia, written and illustrated by Khei Horikoshi, is known in Japan as Boku no Hru Akademia. Japan’s “School for Heroes” is how the phrase is translated into English. Young adult manga magazine Weekly Shnen Jump, published by Shueisha, has been serializing it since July 2014. There are also 36 tankbon volumes made up of its chapters as of October 2022. Izuku Midoriya is the main character of the story, a young guy who, while not having a Quirk, aspires to be a superhero someday in a society where people with superpowers, also known as “Quirks,” have become commonplace. Japan’s most famous hero, All Might, bestows Midoriya with his Quirk after recognizing his potential. Additionally, All Might helps Midoriya enroll in a well-known high school with a focus on training future superheroes.
My Hero Academia: Smash!!, My Hero Academia: Vigilantes, and “My Hero Academia: Team-Up Missions” are just a few of the spin-off publications that the manga has inspired. The series has developed a strong media presence. Light novels, stage plays, and a plethora of video games are just a few of the numerous forms of media and commerce that have been created from the series. A television anime series being produced by Bones is currently telling this tale. After the first season, which was broadcast in Japan from April to June 2016, came the second season, which aired from April to September 2017, the third season, which aired from April to September 2018, the fourth season, which aired from October 2019 to April 2020, the fifth season, which aired from March to September 2021, and the sixth season, which debuted in October 2022. It has also been converted into three animated films, whose titles are My Hero Academia: Two Heroes, My Hero Academia: Heroes Rising, and My Hero Academia: World Heroes’ Mission, respectively. Furthermore, it has created eight original video animations (OVAs), each of which is packaged with a special edition of a variety of various volumes of the manga. Developing and writing a live-action film are current projects for Legendary Entertainment.
The manga series’ first volume was made available by Viz Media in August 2015 after the company won the rights to publish it in North America. The Weekly Shonen Jump magazine, which they also publish online, also published it at the same time. Shueisha has begun publishing the series in both Japanese and English at the same time on the Manga Plus online platform. The rights to broadcast the anime series on television, to sell it in stores, and to stream it on streaming services have been purchased by Crunchyroll. The Toonami programming block of Adult Swim first aired the English-dubbed version in May 2018.
In addition to frequently appearing on The New York Times’ list of best-selling books, My Hero Academia has enjoyed tremendous commercial success. As of January 2022, there were more than 65 million copies of one manga series in circulation, making it one of the most successful in terms of sales. Any sales of spin-offs are not included in this total. The manga has garnered praise for its artwork, characters, plot, battle sequences, and use of pop culture references to Western superhero comics; the anime series has also gotten recognition for its animation, music, pacing, and voice acting in both Japanese and English. It’s been well received by the critics as well. The Sugoi Japan Award and the Harvey Award for Best Manga are only two of the honors that have been bestowed upon both the manga and the anime. The manga and anime have both each received two nominations for Anime of the Year at the Crunchyroll Anime Awards.
Synopsis
In the universe depicted in the My Hero Academia television series, most individuals have developed what are known as “Quirks,” or superpowers (, Kosei). 80 percent of the world’s population is said to have at least one Quirk, and these abilities often manifest in kids before the age of four. There are an endless number of oddities, and unless two people are directly related to one another, it is highly rare to find two people that have the exact same power. A parent is shared by two people in some circumstances, for example. Only a small percentage of those with a quirk are awarded the title of Hero since they aid the government in rescue operations and the capture of criminals who abuse their powers and are more commonly known as Villains. The humans that have had their quirks strengthened can include heroes. Heroes that perform exceptionally well in their jobs are also promoted to the position of “Pro Heroes” (, Puro Hr), which is Japanese for “celebrity.” Most heroes gain fame and public appeal in direct proportion to their rank, with higher-ranking heroes receiving more of both. However, it is not unheard of for up-and-coming heroes to also acquire such a level of fame.
